A head injury is any trauma or damage sustained to the brain, skull or scalp. It can range from a minor bump to a serious traumatic brain injury. A person suffering from a head injury may face several cognitive, physical and emotional challenges depending on the severity of injury.
The most crucial step post a head injury is an early and accurate diagnosis. A medical professional will first evaluate the patient for signs of injury like headache, nausea, dizziness, memory issues etc. Imaging tests like CT scan or MRI are then conducted to determine the nature and extent of damage. These scans help locate any bleeding, bruising or fractures in the brain.
After diagnosis, the treatment plan at Buddhi Clinic involves taking medications to prevent swelling or seizures, surgery to repair any skull fractures or bleeding control.
For severe injuries, the patient requires intensive care for monitoring and management of complications. Physical and occupational therapy also plays a key role in rehabilitation and recovery from neurological impairments caused by the trauma to the brain.
Head injuries can range from mild to severe depending on the nature and extent of trauma to the brain and skull. The main types of head injuries include concussions, skull fractures, and intracranial hematomas.
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that causes a temporary loss of normal brain functioning but no structural damage. It occurs when the brain is violently rocked back and forth or twisted inside the skull. Symptoms may include headache, confusion, memory problems, and dizziness that typically resolve within a few weeks.
A skull fracture results in a broken bone in the skull. There are four primary types: linear, depressed, diastatic, and basilar. Linear fractures cause a straight break but no bone displacement. Depressed fractures involve a bone fragment pressing into the skull. Diastatic fractures widen the suture lines between skull bones. Basilar fractures occur at the base of the skull and often involve more serious brain injury.
Bleeding within the skull can form blood clots, known as intracranial hematomas, which place dangerous pressure on the brain. The major types are:
A blood clot that forms between the skull and the dura mater, the tough outer layer of the meninges.
A blood clot that forms between the dura mater and the brain surface, caused by torn veins.
A blood clot that forms between the dura mater and the brain surface, caused by torn veins.
Widespread damage to axons in the brain caused by rapid acceleration/deceleration forces, commonly seen in car accidents or falls. This type of diffuse shearing injury within the brain is associated with prolonged comas.
Buddhi Clinic treats head injuries by thoroughly evaluating causes to guide individualized treatment aimed at resolution, rehabilitation and optimal long-term function.
Traumatic head injuries occur due to external blows or impacts to the head. Some common causes of traumatic head injuries include:
Head injuries are frequently caused by motor vehicle accidents such as collisions, crashes, or accidents involving cars, motorcycles, bicycles or other vehicles. The impact during an accident can cause the head to hit the steering wheel, windshield, seat or other interior surfaces leading to traumatic brain injury.
Slipping, tripping or falling and hitting the head is a common cause of head injuries, especially in children and elderly individuals. Falls may occur from ladders, trees, playground equipment, stairs or other elevated surfaces.
Being struck in the head during a physical attack, mugging or assault can result in traumatic brain injury. The impact from being punched, kicked in the head or hit with an object delivers a forceful blow that damages brain tissues.
Contact sports like football, hockey, boxing or martial arts have a higher risk of head injuries from tackles, checks, blows or collisions with other players or equipment. Even low-impact sports can involve falls or accidental hits to the head.
The external impacts or blows, shaking of the head can also cause brain injuries even without the skull being fractured. Some examples of nontraumatic head injuries include:
Vigorous shaking of an infant’s head can cause brain damage since their neck muscles and myelin sheaths are still developing. It leads to bleeding within the brain tissues.
Bleeding within the brain may occur spontaneously in some cases due to ruptured blood vessels or aneurysms and can cause damage through pressure effects.
Headache, nausea or vomiting are common. Loss of balance, dizziness, blurred vision may occur.
Memory loss, difficulty concentrating or confusion are signs of cognitive dysfunction. Changes in mood or behavior can also manifest.
Symptoms appear immediately or may be delayed. Minor injuries cause short term issues while moderate or severe injuries pose long term health risks.
Mild injuries involve brief confusion or loss of consciousness. Moderate injuries involve longer periods of unconsciousness. Severe injuries include brain bleeding or seizures with poor long term outcomes.
Any sign of worsening symptoms, persistent headaches or vomiting necessitates immediate medical attention. An accurate diagnosis helps determine recovery potential and treatment requirements.
At Buddhi Clinic, the diagnosis of a head injury is analysed through medical evaluation by a physician. The doctor will also examine the patient for signs of trauma and get a detailed history of the injury from witnesses or family.
A neurological exam is performed to evaluate nerve function. This involves tests of muscle strength, eye movements, sensation and other reflexes. Abnormal findings can help locate areas of the brain that may be damaged.
Diagnostic imaging plays a crucial role in head injury diagnosis:
Provides detailed images of fractures, bleeding, swelling or other structural abnormalities inside the skull. It is the initial imaging test done.
It is used for a more in-depth brain examination. Its scans help identify injuries not visible on CT and determine the extent of damage.
May be used to rule out or identify fractures of the skull or facial bones.
The medical history, physical examination and test results allow physicians to determine the severity and location of injury, and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
The treatment of head injuries is focused on managing the injury based on its severity and type. Treatment may range from self-care measures at home to extensive surgery and intensive care hospitalization depending on the condition of the patient.
Anti-seizure medications are prescribed for severe brain injuries to prevent seizures. Diuretics may be given to reduce intracranial pressure by promoting fluid excretion from the body. In critical cases, induced coma is induced through medications to minimize brain activity and oxygen requirements.
Emergency surgery is performed if needed to address life-threatening issues like hemorrhaging or skull fractures. Surgical procedures aim to repair damages, remove blood clots, and release pressure on the brain.
For serious injuries, intracranial pressure is constantly monitored through specialized catheters or bolts inserted into the brain. This allows medical staff to catch any increases in pressure and treat it promptly to prevent further neurological impact.
Depending on functional deficits, patients may need long-term rehabilitation involving physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to relearn skills and maximize recovery. The treatment trajectory is tailored individually based on medical evaluations.
