Schizophrenia

Popularly mistaken for “split mind,” the word schizophrenia alludes to a schism in the mind – when the borderlines between reality & fantasy begin to blur.

Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality, which causes significant distress for the individual, their family members, and friends. If left untreated, the symptoms of schizophrenia can be persistent and disabling. However, effective treatments are available. When delivered in a timely, coordinated, and sustained manner, treatment can help affected individuals engage in school or work, achieve independence and enjoy personal relationships.
Schizophrenia requires lifelong treatment, even when symptoms have seemingly subsided. Medications are of the utmost importance in schizophrenia treatment, and antipsychotic medications are the most commonly prescribed drugs. In concert with psychosocial therapy & long-term counselling, you can help manage the condition. In some cases, hospitalisation may be needed in order to prevent more harm to the patient.

Signs & Symptoms

Diagnosis

While the diagnosis is clinical, at Buddhi Clinic we use a combination of brain imaging, electrophysiology and blood tests to rule out reversible causes or other contributing factors. We also prescribe a thorough pre-rehabilitation assessment including an evaluation for co-morbidities (associated conditions) which will be required in all instances. At Buddhi Clinic our assessment includes standard outcome indicators for activities of daily life, quality of life, neuro-disability and mental health.

Treatment

At the Buddhi Clinic we take a unique approach to this debilitating disorder. We study its origins in the brain, then we deconstruct the individual psyche, delving into the very origin of the symptoms. We address not just the core symptoms, we treat the comorbidities.

We adopt our unique integrative therapy program approach: stabilising mood and emotion, enhancing insight and self-belief, helping the individual look beyond the world of delusion. We combine modern healthcare with ancient wisdom in the management of this difficult condition.

Our integrative approach, beyond medication, stimulates the brain and stabilises the mind and includes neuromodulation (rTMS & tDCS), cognitive behaviour therapy, supportive counselling for the family and a range of holistic interventions – ayurveda, naturopathy & yoga that help calm the mind and restore normal functioning.
