Parkinson’s Disease And Other Movement Disorders

Parkinson’s Disease and other Movement Disorders are the quintessential manifestation of the aging brain and mind. It affects both men and women though the disease affects about 50 percent more men than it does women.

One clear risk factor for Parkinson’s is age. Although most people with Parkinson’s first develop the disease at about age 60, about 5 to 10 percent of people with Parkinson’s have an “early-onset” of the disease, which begins before the age of 50. Early-onset forms of Parkinson’s are often, but not always, inherited, and some forms have been linked to specific gene mutations.
Unfortunately, Parkinson’s disease cannot be cured. However there are medications that can help control the symptoms, often with positive results. Your may also have to make lifestyle changes, with emphasis on continuous aerobic exercise. Physical therapy that focuses on balance and stretching may be important, as well as speech pathology.

We specialise in complete brain and mind care.

At Buddhi, We offer a comprehensive program of blended healing that brings together the best each discipline offers – from Brain Stimulation to Psychological Therapy, Ayurveda to Yoga, Cognitive Stimulation to Naturopathy, Physical, Occupational & Speech Therapy Access Buddhi Services through Home Care, In-Hospital & Online models.

Signs & Symptoms

Parkinson’s symptoms usually begin gradually and get worse over time. As the disease progresses, people may have difficulty walking and talking. They may also have mental and behavioural changes, sleep problems, depression, memory difficulties, and fatigue. While tremors, rigidity & slowness (bradykinesia) are the core symptoms, many patients with PD have cognitive & behavioural symptoms. At Buddhi Clinic we go beyond movement to examine the person with PD and other movement disorders holistically.

Parkinson’s disease has four main symptoms:
Other symptoms may include depression & other emotional changes, difficulty swallowing, chewing, & speaking, urinary problems or constipation, skin problems and sleep disruptions.

Parkinson's is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world.

There are over 40 symptoms. From pain and stiffness to problems with sleep and mental health. Everyone’s experience is different. Dr. E.S. Krishnamoorthy speaks to us about symptoms and how Integrated Medicine can improve quality of life for patients & care givers.

Diagnosis

While the diagnosis is clinical, at Buddhi Clinic we use a combination of brain imaging, electrophysiology and blood tests to rule out reversible causes or other contributing factors. We also prescribe a thorough pre-rehabilitation assessment including an evaluation for co-morbidities (associated conditions) which will be required in all instances. At Buddhi Clinic our assessment includes standard outcome indicators for activities of daily life, quality of life, neuro-disability and mental health.

Treatment

Our Buddhi Clinic program addresses mind, body and movement: improving muscle tone, flexibility, posture and gait. We aim to help our patients by enhancing cognitive function, improving mood and motivation and enabling a range of positive behaviours including modifications in health, nutrition and lifestyle.
